Brigid is depicted here not as the Saint, but as the Pagan Celtic Goddess. A youthful woman, carrying a lamb on her shoulders as a guardian of domesticated animals. She is looking in the distance, towards the returning light of spring. Her mouth is open slightly as if singing or perhaps keening. In her loose hair and around her, strips of gold symbolize the flames that she carries within: The flames of inspiration, creation and life itself.
To strengthen the connection with the ancient goddess I’ve used for the original painting water from a nearby holy well (Rafoney, Co Cavan) dedicated to Brigid in this painting. Original painting is 70 x 49.5 cm. Do contact me if you'd be interested in purchasing the original piece.
